Quite often all Administrators, even Exchange Administrators simply refer to the users they see in the Address section of Outlook casually as the GAL for ease of reference, but really more often than not, you are looking at the OAB.
For information about the parameter sets in the Syntax section below, see Exchange cmdlet syntax.*** NOTE: The GAL is essentially a real-time / online representation of AD Objects that are Mail Enabled for Microsoft Exchange *** The GAL contains information for all email enabled users, Distribution Groups, and Shared Mailboxes and Exchange Resource Mailboxes.GAL Objects are directly viewable in the Exchange Management Console/Shell and OWA and Microsoft Outlook BUT ONLY IN ONLINE MODE – The GAL will only present objects that have AD Attributes beginning with ms EXCH* (and some others) populated that it uses to filter on.Please use the steps below to update your Global Address Book.In order for some GAL entries to show up properly you may need to turn off Cached Exchange Mode. You need to be assigned permissions before you can run this cmdlet.
Although all parameters for this cmdlet are listed in this topic, you may not have access to some parameters if they're not included in the permissions assigned to you.
Please visit the document on How to turn on or off Cached Exchange Mode for (Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, and Outlook 2013).
Outlook 2011 does not use Exchange Cached mode and directly connects to the Global Address Book (GAL) via LDAP connection.
Synchronizing your Outlook (cached) address book with the Global Address book may fix these discrepancies.
Instances of mail that is bounced back to the sender may also be fixed.
When changes occur within the main Global Address Book (GAL) on the Exchange server, computers running Outlook 2007, 2010, and 2013 may not automatically receive the updates.
